About Dr. Salmon
Dr. Salmon is currently the Executive Director of the Center for Anti-bullying and Non-violence. This was formerly the Center for Social Competence. She began her career as a classroom teacher in St. Louis, Missouri and Montbello, California. She was an elementary counselor, Principal and Assistant Superintendent of the Ferguson Florissant School District in St. Louis. She was a licensed psychologist and ran the Creve Coeur Counseling Clinic. She moved to Colorado and started a non-profit to work with aggressive and violent kids and parents. She initially worked with Dr. Arnold P. Goldstein to revise his Aggression Replacement Model and went on to develop the We Teach Peace Curriculum. Over the years the curriculum expanded to all grade levels and all students.
Dr. Salmon currently lives in Broomfield, Colorado with her dogs Panahe and Bailey. She has three grown children: Amie, Scott and Shannon and four grandchildren, Kacie, Camden, Emme and Riley.
EDUCATION
Dr. Salmon has a Bachelor degree in Education and Psychology from the University of Missouri, a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of Missouri. She obtained her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Indiana University. She received a post Ph.D. in Educational Administration and the Superintendency. She currently holds licenses as a teacher, counselor, psychologist, principal and superintendent.
EARLY YEARS
In the early years, Dr. Salmon worked her way up the administrative ladder in the Ferguson Florissant School District in St. Louis. During the early 1990’s St. Louis experienced a great amount of gang violence. There were several murders within the school district. At that time Dr. Goldstein helped the district bring Aggression Replacement Training to the Districts. A North County Service Coalition was begun with the school districts of Ferguson-Florissant, Hazelwood, Pattonville, Ritenour, Riverview and Normandy. The districts created the Reentry Center where gang members were expelled into a facility where the students had four periods of A.R.T. per day. A Parent Empowerment program was begun and parents were required to attend through the court. Research showed 97 per cent success in academics and behavior, including a one year follow up. Salmon started an international organization with Dr. Goldstein. It was originally called ICART but is now called PREPSEC. A Google search on the North County Service Coalition in St Louis turns up a highly detailed account of its history.
Once the move took place to Colorado, the curriculum was rewritten, expanded and researched. Trainings were offered and spread to other states and abroad. Conferences were begun on an international level. Expanded programs included Super Nanny, After School, and Summer School. As the curriculum changed, so did the title of the Center. Since we work with anti bullying and non violence the current title of Center for Anti-bullying and Non-violence fits better.
